There are albums that entertain, and there are albums that speak. Unspoken Conversations, the latest release by pianist and composer Barry DeGroot, belongs firmly to the latter. It is an intimate collection of seven instrumental pieces where every note feels like a fragment of an unspoken dialogue between the heart and the piano. Rooted in neo-classical and new age aesthetics, the album unfolds as a tender confession, a private diary finally shared with the world after years of quiet hesitation.

The opening track, “Serenity,” immediately sets the emotional tone of the album, a delicate, heartfelt melody on piano supported by subtle string textures. It feels like the first moment of release after long introspection, where sound becomes a form of catharsis. The following piece, “Reminiscent,” lives up to its name, carrying a gentle nostalgia through flowing arpeggios and a wistful melodic line. There’s a softness in its phrasing, as if the composer is revisiting moments that still linger in memory.

“Clever Conversation” introduces a more intricate dialogue within the piano itself. The left and right hands seem to speak to each other, without interruption or conflict. The left hand, rather than simply accompanying, carries a countermelody that gives the piece a lively sense of mutual understanding. It’s not a fugue or a counterpointal composition, but it creates a dual texture for the left and right hand, two voices weaving around each other in perfect empathy.

“Somewhere” opens in mystery, built on a foundation of diminished chords that gradually resolve into serenity. The track feels like wandering through uncertainty toward a peaceful realization. “While You’re Here” continues with a dreamlike gentleness, an instrumental ballad where time seems to suspend. The strings blend seamlessly with the piano, creating a floating, introspective atmosphere that evokes the fragility of presence and the beauty of fleeting moments.

With “The Pendulum,” the narrative grows in intensity. While the album retains its calm mood, this piece carries more weight, stronger chord strikes and a clearer rhythmic pulse suggest a shift toward self-assertion. It feels as if the inner voice, once whispered, now dares to speak louder.

The album closes with “All That Was,” a deeply emotional and dynamically rich finale. It begins softly, with reflective restraint, then gradually builds into a powerful climax before returning to quietude. It is a piece of reconciliation, between the past and the present, between fear and release. As the final notes fade, the listener is left with a sense of closure and gratitude, as if having overheard a conversation not meant for words.

At its core, Unspoken Conversations is a profoundly personal statement. As the title suggests, it captures the emotions that words could not contain, moments of vulnerability, nostalgia, and quiet joy. The piano serves as the artist’s most honest voice, transforming private reflection into a universal language of feeling.

Born into a home where music gently echoed through the walls, Barry DeGroot discovered the piano almost by instinct, first by listening to his mother’s lessons, then by finding his own melodies among the keys. From those early days, sound became his way of understanding the world: classical works like Moonlight Sonata stirred his imagination, while the shimmering textures of ’80s synthesizers and the calm introspection of Windham Hill’s new age music shaped the dual nature of his musical soul. For decades, life carried him elsewhere, to careers, responsibilities, and the quiet routines of the corporate world, but the piano remained a constant companion, a place where he could return to feel, remember, and breathe. Now, at this new chapter of his life, he steps fully into that world he never left behind, composing, performing, and creating with renewed freedom, sharing at last the music that has always spoken for him when words could not.

With Unspoken Conversations, Barry not only shares his long-guarded compositions but also a piece of his inner world. Each track feels like a conversation once left unfinished, now spoken aloud through the piano’s language of touch and resonance. The result is an album that is both introspective and inviting, offering solace to anyone who has ever felt something too deep to articulate.
