With his new single “Sentieri”, Italian cellist and composer Luca Basile invites us once again into a cinematic soundscape where classical roots meet modern epic storytelling. Following the release of his debut album Il Viaggio, this piece marks the beginning of a new musical journey, serving both as a spiritual continuation and a bold introduction to his upcoming second album. “Sentieri”—Italian for “paths”—is not only a title, but also a metaphor for the emotional terrain the music explores: the act of losing oneself to rediscover what truly feels like home.
Luca Basile’s music is like a thunderstorm mapped on silk—epic compositions wrapped in the warm timbre of the cello; a warrior’s spirit with a kind and contemplative heart. Listening to his previous works, I’m reminded of Apocalyptica and 2Cellos, and even one of my personal favorite bands, Les Friction. While the latter may tread a different stylistic path, the emotional core feels closely aligned. There’s something in the soul of Luca’s compositions—akin to the ethos of Les Friction or Globus—but not in imitation; rather, he has crafted a sound that is unmistakably his own, with a slightly heavier classical weight anchoring it.
In Sentieri, he takes a step forward in both expression and orchestration. The piece opens like a classical cello sonata—intimate, lyrical, patient. Once the main melody is introduced, the strings join in, then gradually the percussion layers enter, transforming the piece into a rich, cinematic crescendo. Luca’s virtuosity on the cello is undeniable: vibrant, fast-paced passages flow effortlessly, yet never feel mechanical. His control over the instrument is apparent not just in technical proficiency, but in the tenderness of tone and emotion he conveys.
The composition breathes nostalgia and longing for peace. As Luca describes it:
“It is precisely in that moment of losing ourselves that we discover the true meaning of home—right there, where we distance ourselves from the noise of the world and learn to listen to our deepest breathing.”
This idea resonates deeply throughout the track. The cello becomes the narrator, telling a story of longing through sustained lyrical lines, layered over an emotive harmonic bed. The scenery shifts—the cello remains the voice, but its character changes, responding to evolving textures around it. Staccato scales introduce a moment of inner struggle, leading to a resolution in harmony, a moment of arrival. Everything falls silent—briefly—we’re home. And then, as if in celebration, the full arrangement returns with the main theme, in an epic celebration. In the final scene, the cello stands alone once more, with a slightly more resonant reverb than at the start. This subtle shift gives the piece a clear narrative arc—the hero who began the journey in solitude ends it the same way, but in a deeper, more spacious atmosphere. It’s not a return to the same place, but a transformation: solitude enriched by experience, echoing with the memory of everything that has passed. This solitude isn’t sorrowful, but reflective—a gentle moment of self-contemplation.
Luca Basile's next chapter
Sentieri is like a chapter, or even a trailer, for what’s to come in Luca’s evolving musical narrative. If this track is any indication of the path his next album will follow, we’re in for something powerful, cinematic, and deeply human. Luca Basile continues to blend classical technique with emotional storytelling, crafting music that speaks both to the soul and from it. Personally, I can’t wait to hear what comes next.
