Bruce Springsteen, Growing Up.

To the infinitely-bound-to-be toddler:

Other than being an advocate and knight-and-shining armor for those who chose the highway lights instead of the airport lounge, and the love at first sight that chose to take that last call at the bar to the next level, Bruce Springsteen sure stirs up those candy store-like memories of the galavanting toddler with a sack full of firecrackers and a rotten apple with this song; after all, Growing Up is more than just a song, it’s food for thought.

Springsteen astonishingly paints a picture of childhood through his guitars’ cords, a childhood wrapped in daytime “mischief,” the one you find yourself in until an older gentleman/lady puts his/her hand on your shoulder. The piano intro, in the beginning, serves as a gentle nudge into a memoir of languorous summer evenings in the backyard, accompanied by the bass and drums, Growing Up is an endless surf wave of reminiscent ups and downs.

The cherry on top, however, was Bruce’s vocals and poetically put lyrics. Describing his summer days as “ Month-long vacations in the stratosphere” and “ How hard it is to hold your breath” only shows the vivid imagination this toddler –Springsteen, in this case– has at that age and how we all at some point had our own “stratosphere.” Whether that was the front porch, the local grocery store, or your big cousins’ after school party – hey, everyone has his place–we all remember that kid.

So, whether looking for a song to remind you of your golden days or a song to add to your music list for the drive home, Growing Up won’t let you down!
