Divine Sonata Arashk Azizi

What is Divine Sonata?

Divine Sonata is a three-movement work for solo piano that reimagines Dante’s journey through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso in the context of the modern world. Instead of Christian mythology, Azizi interprets the three realms as reflections of contemporary human struggles: war and oppression as Hell, the restless hope for change as Purgatory, and peace as Paradise.

The piece was commissioned by Ge.Ne.Ra of Casa di Dante in Ravenna, the city where Dante spent his final years. It was premiered in 2024 at the Ravenna Dante Festival, where Arashk first presented his interpretation of Dante’s vision through music. With its blend of poetic narration and expressive piano writing, the work transforms the 14th-century epic into a modern reflection on human resilience and hope.

About the composer

Arashk Azizi is a composer and pianist whose works often draw inspiration from literature, philosophy, and history. His music ranges from intimate piano works to large-scale symphonic compositions, often bridging past and present through deeply personal interpretations.

The tour

The Tallinn concert is part of Azizi’s European tour. Following the Estonian premiere, he will perform in Ravenna twice – on 1 October 2025 at Pallavicini 22 with a new composition inspired by Roman mosaics, and on 4 October 2025 at A.p.A.I. in a peace concert featuring the Inferno movement of Divine Sonata. The tour will conclude in Rome on 5 October 2025 with a full performance of Divine Sonata in Trastevere.
