In her debut release Love & Loss, composer and pianist Zhanna Dzhurayeva bridges the worlds of classical tradition and modern sound design with sensitivity and emotional power. Recorded at Insane Sounds in Fort Lauderdale and produced by Salvatore Monteleone, the four-track EP transforms deeply personal experiences into a musical tale, narrative of love, grief, and resilience.
Zhanna brings the classical piano into the present day, her compositions breathe with the lyricism of a concert hall, yet pulse with the textures and rhythmic vitality of contemporary production. Listeners familiar with projects like E.S. Posthumus, Globus, or ERA will recognize the same fusion of cinematic emotion, orchestral scope, and modern beats, though Zhanna’s approach remains uniquely personal and reflective.
The opening track, “Tribulations,” sets the tone with a bright, ascending piano motif and major chord progressions, supported by subtle pads and a steady rhythmic pulse. It evokes perseverance and light, a musical embodiment of hope after struggle, exactly as its title suggests.
“Mira” follows as the heart of the album. Dedicated to the composer’s mother, it begins as a free-flowing piano ballad, intimate and introspective. Gradually, soft percussion and background harmonies emerge, creating a sense of warmth and gratitude that balances the underlying melancholy. The piece speaks both as a tribute and as a meditation, like an instrumental ballad.
With “Zulma’s Serenade,” Zhanna turns toward gentler romanticism. True to its title, it unfolds like a tender evening serenade, graceful, expressive, and filled with poetic restraint. The piano sings here, its phrasing imbued with an almost vocal quality, surrounded by delicate textures that amplify its emotional depth.
The EP concludes with “Daniel,” its most ambitious and dramatic piece. A solemn piano arpeggio opens the track, soon joined by strings that expand its emotional range. The music evolves through contrasting phases, from darkness to motion, from tension to release. Midway through, a more driven rhythm and fuller percussion lift the piece into a moment of triumph before it gently returns to its original theme. Yet by the end, the tone is transformed, the same melody now carries a quiet hope, as if the journey through loss has found peace.
Through Love & Loss, Zhanna Dzhurayeva delivers an emotional experience that feels both cinematic and personal. Her blend of classical sensibility, modern production, and heartfelt storytelling places her among the new generation of composers redefining what contemporary classical music can be.
